Love for Country vs. Disappointment in Government

By Ronnie Reyes | Mga Kwento ni Ronnie

What do you do when you love your country… but you don’t trust the people running it?

It’s a question that hits deep — especially for those of us who have children and grandchildren. We love the Philippines — the land, the people, the warmth, the food, the spirit — but when we look at how the system works, how corruption bleeds the nation dry, and how politics has become a game of power and greed, it’s hard not to feel frustrated.

You see, serving your country is not the same as serving the government.
The government is made up of people — and people can fail.
But the country — that’s home. That’s family. That’s heritage.

When you serve your country, you work, you build, you protect, and you create value — not because the government told you to, but because you care about the people around you. You pay your taxes, you raise your kids right, you help others when you can, you work honestly, and you live with integrity. That’s service to the country.

Many Filipinos lose hope because they equate patriotism with politics. But the truth is, the Philippines is bigger than any politician.

If you cannot trust the government, then trust yourself to do right.
Earn your living honestly.
Provide for your family.
Teach your kids to think critically, to pray sincerely, and to love this nation even if it’s flawed.

If you cannot get out of the country, then build your future here — not by waiting for miracles from leaders, but by creating opportunities with your own hands.

The Philippines doesn’t need more complainers.
It needs more doers.
It needs honest business owners, hardworking parents, upright teachers, sincere workers, and prayerful citizens.

You don’t have to be in politics to serve the country.
You just have to be a good Filipino — wherever you are, whatever you do.

So yes, you can love your country even if the government disappoints you. Because real patriotism isn’t blind loyalty — it’s the courage to keep doing good even when those in power don’t.

Let’s be the generation that fixes what they broke — one honest act at a time.
