Most Filipinos were taught from an early age that success follows a familiar path: study hard, graduate, get a good job, and build a stable career. We were told this was the safest route to a comfortable life.
I followed that path. I studied, graduated, and entered the corporate world. For ten years, I worked hard, climbed the ladder, and did everything right—at least by traditional standards. But deep down, I knew something was missing. I wasn’t unhappy, but I wasn’t completely fulfilled either.
Then I left the corporate world.
At that time, I had no idea I was about to step into my true niche—freelancing. It wasn’t planned. I didn’t wake up one day and say, “I’m going to be self-employed.” But looking back, everything started falling into place.
The Cashflow Quadrant Moment
It all clicked when I read Cashflow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki. He categorized how people earn into four groups:
✔ Employee – Works for a company, earns a salary
✔ Self-Employed – Works for themselves, income depends on performance
✔ Business Owner – Owns a system that works for them
✔ Investor – Makes money work for them
That’s when it hit me: I wasn’t meant to stay an employee. But I also wasn’t a full-fledged business owner or investor (yet). My niche was in being self-employed.
Freelancing gave me the best of both worlds—the flexibility of self-employment and the opportunity to build something bigger than myself.
The Freedom That Comes with Freelancing
What I love about freelancing is that there’s no retirement age.
Unlike in employment, where you’re expected to step aside at a certain age, freelancing allows me to work on my own terms. I don’t have to stop just because a contract says so. I stop when I decide to—not because I’m forced to, but because I choose to.
After all, if we look at the Bible, people didn’t retire. They worked as long as they were able because work wasn’t just about survival—it was part of their purpose.
But here’s the thing: I don’t work to live. I don’t live to work.
Work is simply part of what I do. It’s an extension of my purpose. And my higher purpose is to glorify God in whatever I do.
Expanding Without Limits
Today, as I continue to grow in freelancing, I realize that there’s no ceiling to what I can achieve. My income isn’t tied to fixed hours, and my success isn’t dependent on promotions or office politics. I’ve built multiple income streams, working in real estate, travel insurance, and healthcare. I also have a team—people who, like me, are creating their own paths outside of traditional employment.
Freelancing works for me because it allows me to grow without limits—in income, in opportunities, and in purpose.
Is This Path for You?
Freelancing isn’t for everyone. It takes diskarte, sipag, tiyaga, dasal, and grit. It requires stepping out of comfort zones and challenging what we’ve always believed about career success.
But if you’ve ever wondered if there’s more to life than the usual path—maybe, just maybe, there is.
